Integrated Skills through Canadian Film

Culture Links is a multi-level, communicative, integrated, Canadian ESL series using films, songs and history as vehicles of second language learning.
As the first book in the Culture Link series, Reel Canada brings the appeal of the moving picture to intermediate level ESL classrooms through ten memorable Canadian documentaries, animations and experimental films from the National Film Board of Canada. These short Canadian films are used as the focal points of four skill lessons that combine sound, vision and language to engage students in issues of global importance delivered through a Canadian perspective. Most of the exercises focus on language use and communication in all four skill areas by concentrating on the topics themselves, much the same way students would in a regular academic program.
Watch this short clip sampling films in each chapter of the book

Each chapter contains the following sections:
Introduction: to whet the learners’ curiosity and introduce them to the chapter’s topic
Two Reading Comprehension Passages: one as a warm up to the film and the second one as reinforcement of the theme of the film.
Grammar: dealing with intermediate level structures through practical usage-oriented exercises that deal with the theme of the chapter
The Film: used to improve all skills through a variety of creative activities.
Academic and Creative Writing exercises: to give the students an opportunity to write in both controlled and free styles
Listening Comprehension section: with clips taken mostly from different popular CBC programs and podcasts such as The Link, The Current and Spark.
Idioms and Fixed Expressions: related to the theme of the chapter
Speaking exercises: based on the grammar and the theme of the chapter
Culture notes: exploring the theme in terms of its Canadian implications encouraging critical thinking about how different cultures deal with concepts such as health, privacy, risk taking, crime, and racism
The book is designed to make the laborious task of learning a second language easier and more accessible by making it more fun. Please feel free to keep it so by going through the activities and picking and choosing the exercises that work best in the context of your classroom.
Reel Canada is complemented by a workbook, Video DVD, audio CD, and online teacher’s resource and answer keys.
